01: Malaysia > Pahang > Xmas ‘06 at Fraser’s Hill
We normally spend Christmas weekends at our pad up at Fraser’s Hill, 1420m high in the mountains some 2 hours drive north of KL. This year is no exception.
On the way, a pause at the breath-taking Selangor Dam is never a waste. This huge body of clean fresh water supplies the needs of some of Klang Valley folks.
The white intake pump, and in the foreground the well to drain excess water past the dam into Selangor River. Water at the max now. They used to do white-water rafting here before the dam came, but now everything is underwater.
Next to the very informative visitor centre, there’s a hut. Great spot to just laze and soak in the fresh breeze.
A local resident trying to get friendly.
The next morning, at Fraser’s Hill, some 1420m above sea level, it’s a chilly start to the day. Even the sun is struggling.
Our balcony thermometer says it’s 14C.
Late morning and it gets brighter and warmer …
… and the sun is making some headway, …
… so I decide to take a stroll …
An excellent 1.3km trail, I’d grade it 3/10 for difficulty. Recommended for beginners. Please click image for better view.
And why ‘Bishop’? Please click image for better view.
Looking a bit out of place in the green jungle, but then many people have lost their way, even along Bishop Trail. Please click image for better view.
Even a ‘No Entry’ sign for the truly challenged trekker-wannabe!
Definitely an easy part of the trail.
Did not know this epiphyte thingy could flower, nice coral one too.
Fraser’s Hill is synonymous with colourful montaine birds, and this commonly-found Silver-eared Mesia is no exception. A very plucky fella, foraging the undergrowth in a flock.
A Streaked Spiderhunter (with the characteristic curved beak), pausing from sucking nectar from the fiery red bottle-brush flowers, eye-balls me.
In the undergrowth, the gregarious little Mountain Fulvetta, takes a breather.
Nightfall, and all is quiet and peaceful, and cold again, at the Silverpark apartments. Hey, no matter how much I love the jungles and the critters and the plants, I still need my creature comforts. ![]()
